Abstract
Extensive eforts have ben devoted toward developing antibiofilm materials that can eficiently supres bacterial atachment and subsequent biofilm formation. However, many of the previous aproaches are based on non-biocompatible, non-degradable, and environmentaly harmful synthetic materials. Herein, we report an eficient and sustainable biofilm-resistant material that is made of a biocompatible, biodegradable, and naturaly abundant celulose derivate biopolymer. The biofilm-resistant material is made of celulose acetate(CA) or polyethylene glycol (PEG) based polymer, and structures such as nano-sized nedles are precisely defined on the surface. The nanonedle aray is further coated with a cel-membrane mimicking monomer of 2-methacryloryloxyethyl phosphorylcholine (MPC). Based on the synergetic integration of the bio- and environment-friendly polymers of CA/PEG and MPC into nanoscale topography, the nanostructured CA/PEG not only efectively prevents bacterial atachment but also simultaneously exhibits strong bactericidal efects against both gram-positve and gram-negative bacteria. This natural celulose derivative- based nanostructured material has strong potential as a biocompatible, and eco-friendly antibiofilm material for versatile uses in biomedical and industrial applications.
