Abstract
This paper presents a novel approach to calculate magnetic inductance with fast-computing magnetic field model, referred here as extended distributed multi-pole (eDMP) model. Mutual inductance has been exploited in plenty of applications, including position/orientation sensing and path tracking. Numerical methods have been widely employed for design and analysis of magnetic field, but it often requires heavy computation and its accuracy relies on geometric modeling as well as meshing which cause the method limited in use. Analytical method provides simple and fast-computing results but difficult in handling many realistic and complex conditions such as complicated designs and boundary conditions, etc. In this paper, an existing semi-analytical method, distributed multi-pole model (DMP), is extended to characterize time-varying magnetic field and furthermore integrated with magnetic energy for computing mutual inductance between coils at arbitrary locations and orientations. Simulation results of various structures are presented. The comparisons with previously published data show not only performance in accuracy but also effectiveness in computation.
