유학생들의 인터넷의존에 관한 연구

Abstract

본 연구는 미디어의존이론을 이론적 분석틀로, 자국의 미디어 이용이 제한된 외국유학생들의 인터넷의존과 그 인터넷의존의 결과, 인지적·행동적 변화에 대해서 검토해 보았다. 기존의 미디어 의존이론 연구들은 주로 자연적 재해 또는 사회 환경의 심각한 변동사항 등이 발생했을 때 일어나는 미디어의존현상에만 초점을 맞추었다. 그러나 미디어의존현상은 개별적으로 또는 일상적으로 일어나는 현상이라는 전제하에 특별한 사회변동현상이 없다고 하더라도 제한된 미디어 이용 상황에서 미디어의존현상이 어떻게 일어났는 지를 알아볼 필요가 있다. 데이터 분석결과, 인터넷의존은 인터넷 이용시간과는 다른 것으로써 한국에서 유학중인 중국유학생들은 한국학생들보다 더 강한 인터넷의존현상을 보였다. 또한 민족정체성과 정보와 오락의 욕구는 인터넷의존과 정적인 상관관계를 보였으며 인터넷의존이 강한 중국유학생일 수록 동료유학생들과 인터넷에서 얻은 자국의 정보를 주제로 한 대인커뮤니케이션 빈도가 더욱 많았다. 그리고 인터넷의존, 대인커뮤니케이션, 정보와 오락의 욕구, 민족정체성, 인터넷 이용시간에 관한 경로분석결과, 인터넷의존은 커뮤니케이션 욕구와 대인커뮤니케이션 사이의 매개변인으로써의 역할을 하는 것으로 나타났다.

Utilizing media dependency theory, this study sought to determine whether or not the Internet has powerful cognitive, affective, and behavioral effects when foreign students studying abroad had few other means to get information about their country. Previous dependency studies have focused primarily on media dependency phenomenon under certain circumstances of natural disasters. This study investigated media dependency as a naturally occurring phenomenon under the conditions present in the normal lives of international students. The findings show that the more students perceived their national identity and communication needs, the stronger Internet dependency they have. Additionally, those who had stronger Internet dependency showed greater cognitive and behavioral effects than those who had weaker Internet dependency. Chinese students studying abroad in Korea depend highly on Internet media, more so than Korean students. The result shows that the fewer functional alternatives available to an audience, the more dependency there is on a specific medium. Meanwhile, Internet dependency differs from Internet exposure and frequency of Internet use.
