최상으로의 추리에 대한 구성적 경험론자들의 비판에 내재하는 문제점들

Abstract

최상으로의 추리(inference to the best explanation)는 과학적 지식을 얻는 주요한 방법이다. 구성적 경험론자들(van Fraassen, 1989; Ladyman et al., 1997)은 나쁜 부지로부터의 논증(argument from a bad lot)과 무차이로부터의 논증(argument from indifference)을 전개하여 최상으로의 추리를 비판한다. 나는 이 논문에서 이 두 논증들에 내재해 있는 문제점들을 드러내 보이고자한다. 나쁜 부지로부터의 논증의 전제는 우리가 아직 생각해 내지 못한 경쟁이론들이 실제로 무수히 많이 있다는 것이고, 결론은 우리가 생각해낸 경쟁이론들 중의 최상의 이론이 허위일 확률이 상당히 높다는 것을 실재론자가 증명해야한다는 것이다. 이 논증의 전제는 어떤 가능성이 있다는 것을 주장하는 가능성에 대한 진술이고, 결론은 우리가 어떤 것을 해야만 한다는 규범적 진술이다. 따라서 부당한 논증이다. van Fraassen의 무차이로부터의 논증의 전제는 우리가 아직 생각해내지 못한 이론들이 진리일 확률을 모두 합친 값이 현저히 높다는 것이고, 결론은 우리가 생각해낸 경쟁이론들 중의 최상이 이론은 허위일 확률이 높다는 것이다. 이 논증은 타당하나 전제가 입증되지 않은 가정일 뿐이므로 우리는 결론을 받아들일 필요가 없다. Ladyman 등의 무차이로부터의 논증의 전제는 우리가 생각해내지 못한 이론들이 있을 가능성이 있다는 것이고, 결론은 우리가 생각해낸 경쟁이론들 중에서 가장 설명력이 높은 이론이 진리라는 우리의 신념은 정당하지 않다는 것이다. 이 논증의 전제는 진리이나 결론이 전제로부터 도출되지 않는 부당한 논증이다. 나는 이 논증이 부당하다는 것을 증명하기 위해 인식적 정당화에 대한 토대론, 정합론, 신빙론을 간략히 소개할 것이다. Inference to the best explanation is one of the methods to establish scientific knowledge. Constructive empiricists (van Fraassen, 1989; Ladyman et al., 1997) run the argument from a bad lot and the argument from indifference against inference to the best explanation. I argue that there are intrinsic problems with the arguments. In the argument from a bad lot, the conclusion does not follow from the premise because the conclusion is a normative statement and the premise is a statement about a mere possibility. There is a problem with the premise of the argument from indifference by van Fraassen. No reason is provided for thinking that the unconceived rival theories actually take up a significant portion of the probability space. In the argument from indifference by Ladyman et al., the conclusion does not follow from the premise. From a mere possibility that there are unconceived rival theories, it does not follow that our belief in the truth of the best of conceived rival theories is unwarranted.
