dc.description.abstract | This paper presents a novel method to actively control magnetic field in a region-of-interest using multiple electromagnets (EMs), referred to here as extended distributed multipole (eDMP). Numerous sensor and actuator applications require controlling magnetic fields such as medical device and automation. However, it is difficult to achieve owing to the nonlinearity of the field and its interaction with various materials. In this paper, the eDMP model is used to compute the magnetic field of the EMs. The method achieves fast and accurate field analysis and it can be utilized to control the desired magnetic field using a set of EMs. The magnetic field generated from various designs of EMs and control of the field is numerically simulated and compared with experiments. Finally, two practical applications are presented to show the effectiveness and accuracy of the method. The first is a transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) paradigm used by a medical instrument for diagnosis and treatment of brain disease using magnetic pulses. The effect of the TMS coils on performance is investigated with the eDMP method. The second refers to the locomotion control of a capsule endoscope. Magnetic locomotion can be controlled to attain a desired position and orientation. Simulations and experimental results justify the usefulness of the method that is expected to be extensively applicable. | - |
