미국사학계의 새로운 냉전사 연구

Abstract

미국사학계의 냉전사 연구는 공산권의 몰락으로 인한 냉전의 종식과 함께 본격화 되었는데 이 과정에서 미국사를 포함한 서양사, 특히 미국 외교사학의 새로운 연구 경향들이 반영하면서 연구가 보다 다양화되고 심화되었다. 냉전의 종식 이전에 이미 1980년대부터 서양사학계를 강타했던 ‘문화적 전환(cultural turn)’으로 인해 냉전사 연구가 그 대상과 주제를 다양화했다. 1990년대 말부터 미국사학자들, 특히 외교사학자들로부터 큰 관심을 받게 되고 2000년대 들어와서 중요한 역사적 방법론으로 부각된 ‘트랜스내셔널 전환(transnational turn)’ 역시 냉전사 연구의 범위와 내용을 크게 확대하는데 기여했다. 한편 최근 냉전사에서의 등장한 ‘글로벌 전환(global turn)’이라는 새로운 경향은 미국과 소련 이외의 여러 국가들의 다양한 행위자들과 복잡한 지역적 맥락들을 강조함으로써 미국과 소련 중심의 연구에 도전하면서 냉전사 연구의 폭을 더욱 확장하고 있다.

Interest in the history of the Cold War among American historians has been growing since the end of the conflict, and the study been greatly influenced by various new historical approaches. The 'cultural turn' that has influenced Western history scholarship since the 1980s has been to diversify the subjects and actors in the history of the Cold War. 'Transnational turn' has emerged as an important historical approach that has contributed to expanding the scope and contents of the subject. The recent 'global turn' has further stimulated American Cold War historians by shedding new light on the roles of countries other than the United States and the Soviet Union and drawing attention to local historical contexts.
