수학적 도구론

Abstract

나는 이 논문에서 진리에 관한 대응론, 정합론, 합의론, 상대론, 증명론, 실용론, 성경론, 열정론을 서술하고 비판하고 있다. 논문의 후반부에서는 대응론에 가해진 다음의 전통적 반론 세 가지에 응수하고 있다. 첫째, 신념이 사실에 대응하는지 알 수 없다. 둘째, 대응론은 수학적 진술의 진리성을 설명할 수 없다. 셋째, 세계에는 문장 비슷한 존재들이 없다. 나는 논문의 여기저기에서 독창적인 주장들을 조금씩 하고는 있지만, 이 논문의 주요 목표는 진리에 관한 연구의 첨단에서 괄목할 만한 공헌을 하는 것이 아니다. 이 논문은 학부생들을 염두에 두고 쓰여졌는데, 그들에게 쉬운 언어로 철학의 정수를 보여주고자 한다. 명료하고 엄격한 방식으로 어떤 이론을 비판하고 옹호하는 데에 철학의 정수가 있다고 나는 믿는다. 이런 토론을 즐기는 학부생들이 있고, 그들을 더욱 세련된 철학세계로 끌어들이는 것이 이 논문의 주목표이다.

I state and criticize various theories of truth: the correspondence theory, the coherence theory, the consensus theory, the relativistic theory, the proof theory, the pragmatic theory, the biblical theory and the passion theory. At the end of the paper, I reply to three standard objections to the correspondence theory. The first one is that we cannot know that a belief corresponds to a fact. Second, the theory cannot handle a mathematical statement. Third, sentence-like entities do not exist in the world. Although I make small original claims here and there, the central aim of this paper is not to make a significant contribution at the cutting edge of research on the nature of truth. I rather have a modest aim of showing the essence of philosophy in plain language to undergraduate students upon whom this paper is directed. I believe that the essence lies in rigorous argumentations of criticizing and defending a theory in a clear manner. There are undergraduate students out there who are predisposed to enjoy such argumentations. This paper is intended to attract them to higher philosophical pursuits.
