Rawls's theory of justice holds that an action is morally right because it would be accepted by contractors behind the veil of ignorance. Rawls's theory of justice, thus defined, puts the cart before the horse. Both moral realists and emotivists would endorse this objection to Rawls's theory of justice. Rawls's theory of justice does not provide useful criteria for classifying controversial actions, such as same-sex marriage and affirmative action, as morally right and wrong. However, it does provide a useful rule to encourage moral agents to behave morally. |
