Study of Galaxy Clusters in the SKA Era

“Extragalactic Continuum” is one of the main science topics of the SKA (Square Kilometer Array) project. Observations of diffuse radio emission from galaxy clusters and groups would reveal the nature and origin of the cosmic magnetic field, relativistic particles, and nonthermal processes in the large-scale structure of the universe. However, since the radio emission in galaxy systems is faint and the spectrum is steep, its observations are largely limited by the instrument’s sensitivity and resolution. The SKA will be a significant step forward, particularly in the low-frequency bands of <~ GHz. In this talk, I present a number of unresolved issues in merging galaxy clusters that could be studied with the upcoming SKA. |
