Abstract
Polyacrylonitrile(PAN) is a predominant precursor for manufacturing carbon fibers, and it is widely used in carbon fiber reinforced plastic(CFRP), aerospace industry due to their remarkable properties. In the process of manufacturing the high-performance PAN-based carbon fiber, heat treatment including oxidative stabilization and carbonization is known as one of the most important processes. During heat treatment, factors affecting the characteristics of carbon fiber such as tension, temperature, and residence time should be considered. In addition, for commercialization and industrial performance, usually applied to pilot-scale process after precedence batch-scale process, and in this procedure, it is well known that it is necessary to thoroughly consider the effect on the fiber during heat-treatment in each step.
In this study, the effect of stabilization residence time for the performance improvement of carbon fibers is investigated by the correlation between batch- and continuous-scale heat-treatment. The difference in the carbonization process was shown depending on the residence time of the stabilization temperature and tension. Therefore, the approach for optimizing a process when the continuous-process is performed based on the result of the batch-process will be discussed.
