dc.description.abstract This study investigates how the use of non-honorific language in Korea affect startup members' (non-)participation in the business meetings of a startup company that was founded through a Korean university's support program. The dataset presented consists of two rounds of interviews, alongside observation and videotaping of two of the startup's business meetings. Qualitative analyses have revealed the members' belief that the use of non-honorific Korean would contribute to building more equal power relationships and improved communication. While being aware of their identities as "(non-)co-founder" or "elder/younger member," some members showed explicit reservations in expressing their thoughts and opinions. This is because they have considered it to be "non-participation" in the meetings. The negative emotions toward participation were sustained throughout the meetings, which has discouraged future participation. In a program aimed at cultivating leadership and competence to participate in a business context, the significance of the pragmatics of a language, such as honorifics, must be taught in relation to participation and identities. -
