작가, 매체, 네트워크-1920년대 소설계의 거시적 조망을 위한 시론

Abstract

This paper aims to examine the characteristics of the interpersonal ties formed by writers in the 1920s in Korea from a broader scope based on a network analysis· Existing studies of colonial authors, literary organizations, and periodicals have well documented the importance of literary collectives in the making of modern writers in Korea· Through these studies, we were unable to explore the specific relationships that individual writers forged with their literary groups and magazines in the greater structure of text production· In order to complement and go beyond this methodological weakness, I propose to adopt social network analysis, with data gathered from the contribution of fiction to a particular periodical from 1917 an 1927· By doing so, I raise several questions that would not otherwise have arisen through close reading：What was the shape of the Korean literary field beyond the gatherings of small literary circles? Also, who played a substantial role in bridging peer writers and their groups and in functioning as a hub? By visually analyzing what I call the “writers`` network,” the web of social ties among writers, especially linked through magazines or newspapers they engaged with, I revisit the position and role of lesser renowned writers, such as Ch``oe So-hae, Kim Myon-sun, and others, in maintaining and expanding the world of fiction writers during the formative years of modern literature in Korea· 이 글은 1920년대 근대 작가 형성에 있어, 복수로서의 작가가 맺는 인적 관계의 집단적 성격을 사회연결망 분석이라는 틀을 통해 고찰한다· 문단사, 작가론, 문학조직론, 매체론 및 제도사적 접근 등 기존의 여러 연구는 20년대 문학 여명기 작가 형성에 있어 그 형성이 갖는 집단적 성격을 여러 방면에서 탐구하여 왔다· 그러나 아직 개별적 문학 집단들의 인적 연관과 그 관계의 성격을 상대적으로 규명하는 데에 도움이 될 포괄적 연계망은 보여 주지 못하였다· 이러한 방법론적 한계를 뛰어넘고 한편으로 보완하기 위해 본 논문은 계량적 접근을 바탕으로 한 네트워크 분석 방식을 차용한다· 사회학, 인류학에서 발전한 네트워크 분석은 개인과 집단 혹은 집단과 집단 간의 인적관계와 그 구조를 시각화하고 분석하는 데에 유용하다· 1917년부터 1927년까지 신문과 잡지에 투고된 소설 목록을 데이터로 삼아, 본 논문은 소규모 동인의 이합집산으로 이해되던 작가집단을 인적, 매체적 관계가 연결된 거시적 네트워크로 이해하고 그 안에서 근대문학 형성기에 있었던 작가들이 갖는 위치와 역할을 새롭게 살펴보고자 한다·
