공리주의에 대한 고전적 비판과 그에 대한 응수

Abstract

고전적 공리주의에 의하면, 도덕적인 행동은 언제나 행복을 최대화하고, 행복을 최대화하는 행위는 언제나 도덕적이다. 윤리학 문헌에서 철학자들은 공리주의를 비판하기 위해 많은 반대사례들을 제시했다. 내가 보기에, 그들의 반대사례들은 고전적 공리주의를 허물기는 하지만 통계적 공리주의를 허물지는 못한다. 통계적 공리주의에 의하면, 도덕적인 행동은 “대개” 행복을 최대화하고, 행복을 최대화하는 행위는 대개 도덕적이다. 공리주의는 행복만이 그 자체로 가치 있다고 주장한다. 노직(1974)과 레이철스 & 레이철스(2007)는 행복 이외에도 선택과 우정이 각각 그 자체로 가치 있다고 주장한다. 내가 보기에, 선택과 우정은 행복을 최대화하는 수단으로 이용될 수 있기 때문에 가치 있을 뿐이다. 마지막으로, 공리주의는 진화론의 틀 안으로 들어올 수 있다는 강점을 가지고 있다.

According to classical utilitarianism, an act is moral when it maximizes happiness, and an act maximizing happiness is moral. In the ethics literature, philosophers presented many counter-examples to criticize classical utilitarianism. In my view, the counter-examples refute classical utilitarianism, but not statistical utilitarianism. Statistical utilitarianism holds that a moral act tends to maximize happiness, and an act maximizing happiness tends to be moral. Utilitarianism asserts that only happiness is valuable in itself. Nozick (1974) and Rachels & Rachels (2007) argue that choice and friendship respectively are also valuable in itself. In my view, they are valuable solely because they serve as a means to maximize happiness. Finally, an advantage of utilitarianism is that it can be embedded in the theory of evolution.
