미국에서의 디지털 역사학 발전 과정과 최근의 경향

Abstract

디지털 역사학이라고 지금 부르는 새로운 역사적 방법은 1980년대 후반에 등장한 월드와이드웹(WWW)과 이후의 인터넷 발전이라는 커뮤니케이션 혁명에 그 기원을 두고 있다. 이후 디지털 역사는 1990년대와 2000년대를 거치면서 양적, 질적 팽창을 해왔고 2010년대에 들어서는 주제, 방법, 표현 형식을 더욱 다양화하고 있다. 그런데 새로운 단계로의 도약을 앞둔 이 시점에 디지털 역사가들과 전통 역사가들은 서로를 좀 더 이해하고 둘 사이의 간극을 좁힐 필요성을 느끼기 시작했고 이러한 필요를 충족시키려는 시도들이 나타나고 있다. 향후 디지털 역사는 더욱 발전하고 전통 역사학과의 접점도 확대될 것으로 기대된다. 그러나 기본적으로 존재하는 양자의 차이도 존재하므로 성급한 해결책을 찾기보다 점진적이더라도 꾸준히 서로에 대해 이해하려는 노력이 필요할 것이다.

A new kind of history called “Digital History” originated from the communication revolution by the development of the World Wide Web and the Internet. The digital history has developed in the 1990s and 2000s both qualitatively and quantitatively with various forms of representation. In the 2010s, digital history has further diversified its themes, methods, and interfaces. More importantly, digital and traditional historians began to feel the needs to narrow the gap between them and have searched for ways to fulfill the needs. Their efforts should include both solving structural issues related to the review and reward systems and individual scholar’s endeavor to understand each other. More importantly, the two groups of scholars should patiently keep trying to cooperate with each other.
