Abstract
Polymeric carbon and oxygen were detected at the surface of tungsten carbide powders by Auger electron spectroscopy and electron spin resonance. Chemisorption of dihydrogen is suppressed by polymeric carbon but enhanced by surface oxygen as some of the latter reacts in the presence of water with hydrogen spilling over from the tungsten carbide parts of the surface. © 1987.
